Help Reducing Salt

Most of us consume too much. It is estimated that the average person consumes about 4 to 8g a day, far too much. You are probably eating far more than you realize. Found in processed meat, canned foods, most cheeses, processed meals, salty snacks, tomato based foods etc. There are products on the market that are lower in sodium they contain potassium chloride and much less sodium chloride. We should be aiming for about 2.5g a day. You will need to start cutting down gradually, otherwise your food will seem very tasteless. Eventually you will begin to taste the food itself as you re-educate your taste buds. Too much sodium has been associated with fluid retention and in some high blood pressure.

Here is a way of adding more taste and less salt. Maybe at first, while you are weaning yourself off salt you could add a higher proportion of salt and gradually reduce to the amount suggested below.

Salt Reducer

1teasp celery seeds

1tablesp dried thyme

1tablesp dried oregano

1tablesp fine sea salt

Grind the 3 herbs together into a powder and add to the salt.
